The photographers represent diverse backgrounds and subjects, speaking to the universality of spirituality and the nuances in representations of intangible forces which shape our world and lived experiences.
The exhibition features American photographer Robert Farber, whose impressionistic, painterly artistic style has been a staple in fashion photography for decades."

Meet Robert Farber: AIPAD
Meet Robert Farber on Friday, April 6th from 1 to 3pm.
Colour will be available and on view at AIPAD, at 21st Editions Booth 86.
Robert Farber spent much of the ‘80s and ‘90s photographing the fashion industry’s leading super models in Kodachrome and Agfachrome. But a storage mishap exposed some of that film to the elements. Colors bled and chemicals went awry. Farber took his time observing the process as it unfolded. Then, he selected the moment when the flaws in front of him bore their own aesthetic perfection and the metamorphosis was complete. So began Farber’s new series, Deteriorations—an extraordinary addition to an already formidable legacy.
Collier Brown pairs Farber’s Deteriorations with one of the greatest treatises on color ever written: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Farbenlehre (1810), translated by Charles Eastlake as Theory of Colours (1840).
Models at the vanguard of fashion once starred in these photographs. Fantasy, glamour, and charm coalesced into a statement about beauty — beauty, that is, of a particular moment in time. But, in a very literal sense, these images have outlived the popular culture of the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s — not to mention this moment, as well as all moments to come. In their current state of distress, they transgress against Western paradigms of symmetry and form. Farber’s images—what he calls ‘Deteriorations’ — have divested themselves of their original intentions to become something entirely Other.
In his last pronouncement on color, Goethe famously said,
- from Introduction by Collier BrownThe highest which man can attain … is astonishment; if the primary phenomena bring him this, let him be satisfied, and forbear to seek above or behind; for here is the limit.
The Ektachrome and Polachrome film used in most of Farber’s shots have reached their corporeal limit. But in the process of that misfortune, they have freed themselves from the chromatic order they once served. The result is astonishing.
